Fox News reported that late Monday, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said it was opening a probe into former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. "A number of them advised her to keep the story to herself, arguing that Schneiderman was too valuable a politician for the Democrats to lose".

"Healey was sharing the spotlight with Schneiderman on a lot of these lawsuits and going after the Trump administration, now she's the only attorney general left standing", said Rob Gray, a Republican political strategist.

Schroeder, who served in the New York State Assembly when Schneiderman was in the State Senate, said the allegations are shocking. "I therefore resign my office, effective at the close of business on May 8". "I have not assaulted anyone", adding nonconsensual sex is a line he'd never cross.

Four former girlfriends of Schneiderman allege he repeatedly hit them, often in bed and after he had been drinking, according to the New Yorker. As Schneiderman held an Albany, New York, news conference announcing his support for the bill, domestic violence victims stood alongside him.

During his time as Attorney General, Schneiderman was known as a champion for women and equal rights.

"She brings the great experience of being Nassau County district attorney and United States congresswoman", Zimmerman said.

"I stand with my colleagues to have these allegations fully investigated".

Schneiderman's permanent replacement will be chosen in a November election.

"In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity", Schneiderman said in a statement earlier Monday.

Kathy Hochul cannot practice law in New York State, but Zellner said she's not required to be licensed in order to serve as AG. "We have your back and we are fighting for you".

As local democrats come to terms with disturbing allegations made against a fellow party member, the hunt is on for New York's next Attorney General. David's appointment would be a particularly pointed statement by the state legislature, which will name Schneiderman's successor. He faced intense pressure to resign and impeachment threats from Republicans.

Post the report, Schneiderman denied charges of sexual assault against him. I could not remain silent and encourage other women to be brave for me.

In February, Mr Schneiderman sued The Weinstein Company for failing to protect employees from years of disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual misconduct despite multiple complaints from staff.
