Hurricane Irma was downgraded to a Category 2 storm late Sunday afternoon.

The incredible footage was captured in Key West, Florida, the most southern part of the United States, which is set to be smashed by the killer hurricane.

It was smacking Naples after coming ashore at Marco Island at 3.35pm (local time). But even more powerful could be the storm surges that threaten to swallow Florida's coastal cities.

There is a hurricane warning for almost the entire state of Florida.

"We're all going to be OK", Ploghoft said. Don't shoot guns at storms.

Forecasters say it kills more people than the strong winds.

"It has become something a little out of my control", said the 22-year-old.

Tornadoes have heralded historic Hurricane Irma's arrival in Florida as Britons in the strengthening storm's path were warned their situation may "deteriorate significantly".

Waves crash over a seawall at the mouth of the Miami River from Biscayne Bay. They are expected to start arriving early on Monday morning.

As Irma tracks closer to Florida, those winds will continue to increase.
