United in talks with Ibrahimovic about striker staying

A year ago, the buzz around the Premier League was focused on the arrival in Manchester of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho as managers of City and United.

Mourinho has reset United's style of play and made them robust; a team of bruisers.

"We have the confidence levels of a team who won a European competition". Additionally, the guaranteed goals of the 36-year-old will be vital if a goal shy United team are to challenge for the big two trophies, the Premier League and Champions League.

United finished sixth last season but did qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League. Lukaku hit 25 goals last season and provides Mourinho with a younger, more mobile replacement for the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic. No excuses will be accepted by success-hungry fans - silverware is now expected. It's not something urgent, it's nothing that you are desperate to have it done or not done.

It comes back to the formation question.

Either way, Mourinho felt the need to invest in the striker position, which is fair enough considering the departures of Zlatan and Rooney, and Lukaku was brought in. In the meantime there will be opportunities for the likes of Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

He was not offered a new deal at the end of last season after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in April and is likely to be ruled out of action until Christmas. Long scoreless spells followed and he was forced to settle for an intermittent role.

"My initial analysis coming from January and progressively through the other months I was thinking about four players but I am not a difficult person to work with - in spite of it looking different sometimes". Mourinho has not spent £75m on a substitute.

With exciting Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus now fit and ready, Guardiola has a second striking threat alongside Sergio Aguero to compliment the creative talents of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane. And finally, will he do more harm than good? Brazilian Ederson is believed to be the answer to their goalkeeping troubles and Portugal's Bernardo Silva is a classy addition to the midfield. Many were unsure what a player that expensive should be doing and there were unreasonable expectations put upon him. A short-term deal for Ibrahimovic in January, regardless of wages and any bonuses is a no risk situation for the club and could well prove to be the most important deal they could do this season.
